FTP Information To help all users, I am going to write this file to explain some of the quirks of FTP and our particular FTP sites. It will be posted on my Web page and FTP site under the name ftpinfo.txt. We have two FTP sites, they are: ftp.teuton.org/harpoon ftp.mobiuscon.com/server/pub/harpoon The Mobiuscon site can be the slowest site. It is a business computer so will be slow during business hours. It is recommended that you only try and download and upload files early in the morning or late in the evening(Eastern Standard Time). If you try and download during business hours or at peak usage hours on the net it will be very slow downloading and you may lose the connection especially if you are downloading large files. At this time, 09/21/97, this site is very hard to use. You may find that it is impossible to get a connection. I would reccomend that you use this site only as a last resort. There is basically three ways to download and one way to upload files to the site, they are: The best way is to use an FTP client. I will post both an IBM client and Mac. client in my primenet site and link them to my Web page for you to download. With the client you can log on to either site and go through the directories, there are three on each site. You can download from any directory except ftp.mobiuscon.com/pub/harpoon/input. You may upload any files for the group in this directory but cannot download here. To sign on either site use the address above and sign in as anonymous and guest. This is usually the fastest and most stable method of downloading and uploading files. The second way is to use your Browser(Netscape, Microsoft Internet Explorer etc. etc...) to download files, notice I said download since you cannot download files this way. CAUTION!!! browsers maintain a cache on your hard disk of the most recently visited sites, so when I make changes the changes will not appear until the cache is flushed. If you read about or I send you a message about a change and you look and it does not appear to be there, you are reading your cache not the site. You must either manually flush your cache or wait until the old information is replaced by new information. The cache will drop out older info as new info is stored in there. !!!!CAUTION. This problem does not occur when using an FTP client. To clear your cache follow these steps: Load Netscape and look across the top of the screen, you will see a selection called options, click on it. A drop down menu will apprear select cache and network from this and another screen will appear. When this screen appears select Cache and Network from this screen. When the next screen appears there will be two selections, Clear Memory Cache and Clear Disk Cache. Select both of these and it will clear all the caches. You can now go and load the site you want and will get the latest information. If you are using an FTP client: ftp.teuton.org/harpoon ftp.mobiuscon.com/server/pub/harpoon If you are using Netscape: http://www.harpoonpages.com/ftp ftp://ftp.mobiuscon.com/server/pub/harpoon If you are using Microsofts Internet Explorer: You must enter the directory you want to go as below http://www.harpoonpages.com/ftp1 http://www.harpoonpages.com/ftp2 ftp://ftp.mobiuscon.com/server/pub/harpoon/harpoon1 ftp://ftp.mobiuscon.com/server/pub/harpoon/harpoon2 The third and finally way to get to the sites is through my Web pages at http://www.azstarnet.com/~saulj or http://www.teuton.org/~sjacobs. You can get to all the directories but cannot upload files this way since it will use your Browser. All the restrictions that are listed in the browser section apply here. Some of the most commonly used files are connected through direct links. If the appear slow or if they kick you out before the download is complete they are probably coming from Mobiuscon so try back at a later time when the net is not so busy. Saul H.
