Windows 95 installation for Harpoon II There seems to be a lot of problems with users getting Harpoon II to run under Windows 95. I have run the program ever since Win95 came out with no problems, if fact I was running it with the Beta version before it was released for sale. The problem most people have is trying to run the program in the Win95 mode(this includes going to the MSDOS prompt in the start menu). When 360 designed the program they used a non standard DOS extender to get beyond the 640k memory limit that is inherent in DOS. The DOS extender they used is not compatible with Windows or Windows 95 and will not run under either. This is why you will crash if you try and run the program in Windows or Win95. In Win95 you must shell out to DOS 7.0 run the program and then reload Win95 when you are finished. This sounds complex but if done correctly Win95 will take care of everything for you. Here is the method I use to get it run: Load Harpoon2 on your hard disk(I recommend you do this rather than trying to run it off the CD because of the speed). Click on the My Computer Icon and then find the drive and directory that Harpoon2.exe is located in. Find the file Harpoon2.exe and right click your mouse on it. From the pop up menu select create a shortcut. Drag the shortcut onto your desktop. Now point your mouse at the shortcut you just created and right click on it. Another pop up menu will appear, click on properties. A large screen will now pop up with folders across the top. Select program from the menus at the top. When the program menu comes up select advanced down near the bottom. When the Advanced Program menu appears point at the MSDOS Mode block and click. You now must enter in your Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files for Harpoon II in the areas down at the bottom of the screen for them. Your Config.sys must contain the following: (If you want to run Smartdrv put c:\windows\himem.sys here) files=40 buffers=40 stacks=0,0 (put any drivers you need for your CD, sound and video cards here) Your Autoexec.bat must contain the following: (Whatever drive and directory contains your mouse driver and the file mouse.com for example here is mine) c:\mouse\mouse.com (Yours may be different if your mouse driver is not on drive C: or is not in the mouse directory.) (You !!!MUST!!! have a mouse driver or Harpoon II will not run. If you cannot find the file mouse.com on your disk, get an old copy of DOS and copy the mouse.com file to your hard disk I have done this for several people and it works just fine.) (If you want to run Smartdrv put c:\windows\smartdrv here.) (Put any drivers you need for your CD, sound and video cards here.) !!!DO NOT!!! put any thing else in the config.sys or autoexec.bat file than above or the program !!!WILL!!! crash on you. Saul H.
