Tactics Forum Topic - Setting up AEW cover in Harpoon Classic/H97 I just want to note first of all that I think the Tactics Forum is an excellent idea, and I am looking forward to reviewing the comments posted on Ed Ladner's website. Now, to the topic at hand: Like all versions of Harpoon (whether it be Harpoon 2, H2AE, Harpoon Classic or H97), the simulation tends to have its own set of quirks. These quirks can sometimes create frustrating and anomalous events that can put a dent in an otherwise enjoyable scenario. In Classic/H97, when in command of US Navy carrier battle groups, I always put my E-2 Hawkeye AEW&C cover outside the formation. One of the reasons for doing this, other than for tactical reasons which I will get into further below, is to avoid a flaw in the game. I have often noticed that enemy CVBGs or SAGs, or for that matter, enemy surface ships in general, have a tendency to run in the opposite direction immediately upon detection of an E-2 in-formation. This tends to hinder and sometimes prevent an otherwise intended confrontation with the enemy. The cure is to ensure that your AEW cover remains outside of formation patrol. I usually put one or more E-2s on an axis off-center from the CVBG's intended course, and at a distance of about 100-150 nm from the center of the formation, depending on the circumstances. This not only improves the standoff range at which enemy forces can be detected, but prevents the enemy from obtaining a precise fix on the location of your CVBG. (It also prevents him from obtaining course and speed information on the CVBG). When used in concert with an EA-6B patrol that is inside the formation, the result is a very effective denial of information to enemy forces. It is also important to ensure that the AEW cover, once in place at a distance from the formation, has sufficient CAP protection. I usually place one or more two-ship flights of F-14s at a short distance from the E-2, usually ahead of it. You can be sure that the enemy will target the E-2 quickly and repeatedly. The F-14s usually remain passive to permit me to set up a "fighter trap" if and when the enemy comes after the E-2. Anyway, I am sure there are numerous variations on this point that other HULL members can comment upon. Brad Leyte
